Choosing and Running a Tool Scheme

Matching the scheme to the work

Count the jobs done most often and choose the scheme that covers them. A service bay needs sockets, bits, pliers and a torque wrench; a machinery workshop needs the larger spanners, hammers and pullers that the express schemes leave out.

Allow for growth. A 139 piece scheme fills a bay, but a 238 or 247 piece scheme gives room to add the special tools that arrive later without the cabinet overflowing.

Keeping the set complete

Put tools back in the liner position they came from, not in the nearest drawer. The printed layout is what makes the set self-checking and it is the reason fewer sockets go missing.

Check the ratchet and the extensions periodically rather than only when a job is held up. A worn ratchet that slips under load is what rounds a bolt head.

Tool care

Wipe tools with an oiled cloth before they go back in the drawer. Rust starts in a closed drawer in a damp workshop and it starts on the chrome that is already scratched.

Do not overload the ratchet with an extension bar. Use the next size up instead, and keep the impact work to impact-rated sockets.

Moving and loading

Push the cabinet rather than pulling it, and lock the castors before pulling a heavy drawer out. A fully loaded cabinet is heavy and will tip if a top drawer is opened with the tool inside.

Distribute the weight with heavy tools in the lower drawers, and load the cabinet into a vehicle only with the drawers locked and the top closed.
