The cylinders are cold-drawn steel with a welded base, which is the construction used for small high-pressure gas cylinders. The working pressure quoted by the supplier is for a liquefied gas fill.

Thread size matters as much as capacity. These are supplied for inflator heads and life jacket mechanisms; check the thread on the head before ordering in bulk, since a cartridge of the right size with the wrong thread will not seal.

A 16 g cartridge fills a road tyre to riding pressure. A larger tyre or a lower starting pressure needs the 20 g or 25 g, and a fat tyre may need two cartridges.

Fit the cartridge to the inflator head hand-tight and check the thread engages squarely. Cross-threading the head is the usual reason a cartridge vents without inflating anything.

Life jackets

Inflation systems are built around a specific cartridge size and thread, and the mechanism has to be matched to it. Replace like for like rather than substituting a larger cylinder.

Check the firing mechanism and the cartridge seat at each service, and replace a cartridge that has been sitting in a damp locker for a season.

Keep the cylinders dry and out of direct sun. Steel cylinders do not enjoy damp storage, and a corroded neck is a cylinder that will not seal.
