Sizes and Matching

Garden hose is sold as 1/2 in or 3/4 in bore. The connector has to match both the hose it is pushed onto and the fitting it clicks onto, which is why both sizes are listed.

The reducing version joins a 1/2 in hose to a 3/4 in hose or to a 3/4 in tap fitting, which is what is needed when a short 1/2 in hose has to run from a 3/4 in supply.

How the connector is fitted

Cut the hose square, push the barb fully home and tighten the locking nut if the hose is stiff. A square cut is the difference between a joint that seals and one that drips.

Run water through the hose before joining so that grit is flushed out of the line rather than trapped in the joint.

Why plastic rather than brass

A moulded plastic connector does not corrode and is light enough to hang on the end of a hose without kinking it. It is also the cheaper option where connectors are lost or left outside over winter.

Brass is chosen where the connector stays on a permanent supply or has to take hot water.

Choosing and Using a Shackle

1. Match the shackle to the sling and to the attachment point, not to the load alone: the pin has to pass through the eye it is joining.
2. Use a bow shackle where the pull fans out across two or three legs; use a D shackle where the pull is straight, and save the size and the cost.
3. Choose hot-dip galvanised for outdoor, road and marine-adjacent work, and 304 stainless where the shackle is permanently wet.
4. Buy screw-pin shackles where the joint is rigged and de-rigged; buy bolt-type only where the shackle stays in place.

Care and Maintenance

Check the pin thread and the body for cracks, wear or deformation before each lift, and check that the pin turns freely by hand.

Take a shackle out of service if it has been overloaded, if the pin is bent, or if the thread has been damaged. Store galvanised shackles dry where possible.
