A quick connector pushes into a hose end and grips it from the inside, so two lengths can be joined in seconds. It is what turns a cut hose back into a working length and what lets a shorter hose be extended for a bigger garden.
Three versions are supplied: 1/2 in straight, 1/2 in to 3/4 in reducing, and 3/4 in straight. The reducing version is the one used when an old 1/2 in hose has to feed a modern 3/4 in fitting or vice versa.
They are moulded plastic with a barbed stem, so they need no clips and no tools. That also makes them a stock item worth keeping in boxes rather than singly.

Fitting
Cut the hose square and push the connector fully home so the barbs are inside the hose and the shoulder sits against the cut end. A hose cut at an angle will leak no matter how hard it is pushed.
Warm the hose end in hot water if it is stiff; forcing a cold hose splits it at the cut and the joint will not hold.
Choosing the size
Measure the inside diameter of the hose, not the outside. A 1/2 in connector in a 3/4 in hose will pull straight out under pressure, and a 3/4 in connector will not enter a 1/2 in hose.
Use the reducing connector where two different hoses have to be joined; it avoids buying a length of new hose to match one fitting.
