Fenced Platform Trolley: Overview
A flat platform truck carries a load as long as the load stays balanced. Add a fence and the deck can be loaded to the edges, which is why fenced trolleys are the standard for order picking, market stalls and moving boxes between rooms or vehicles.
The fence is a steel frame that folds down. Folded, the trolley stores against a wall and takes the same space as a flat truck; upright, it holds a stacked load through doorways and up ramps.
Platforms run from 90 x 60 cm to 120 x 80 cm, on six or eight inch wheels, and the larger platforms take eight inch wheels for use on uneven ground and kerbs.

Choosing Platform and Wheels
Platform size
Size the platform to the largest thing that has to be carried, then check it will pass the doorways on the route. A 120 x 80 cm trolley will not go through a standard 80 cm door frame without being tipped.
The 100 x 60 and 120 x 60 platforms are the sizes used for order picking and box handling; 120 x 80 is for bulkier loads and takes more of the aisle.
Wheels and brakes
Six inch wheels roll easily on smooth warehouse and shop floors. Eight inch wheels are for yards, kerbs and paving, where a small castor catches on every joint.
Wheel material decides the ride as much as the size: solid rubber grips and is quiet, polyurethane rolls easily and resists oil, and hard nylon wears longest on smooth concrete.
A brake on one or both castors is worth having where the trolley is parked on a ramp, in a vehicle or on a slope.
Using a Fenced Trolley
Loading
Put the weight over the axle end and build the load up in layers rather than leaning it against the fence, which is what bends the frame over time.
Keep tall loads against the fence on all loaded sides and check the fence is locked upright before moving off.
Maintenance
Wipe the castor swivels clean and check the wheel bolts periodically; a loose castor bolt is what makes a trolley track badly and wear the fence joints.
Keep the hinge points of the fence lightly oiled so it still folds after a season outdoors.
