Choosing the Size and the Wheels

Matching the platform to the job

A 600 x 900 mm platform is the picking cart: it turns in a narrow aisle and carries a cage of parts or a stack of totes. The 700 x 1200 mm size is the general warehouse trolley, and 1000 x 1500 mm is for bulk transfer where the load is a pallet’s worth of goods rather than a handful of boxes.

Take the capacity as a whole-trolley figure and leave headroom. A trolley that is run at its rated load on rough concrete will start to lose castors long before a trolley working at two-thirds of it.

Wheel material and the floor

Thermoplastic rubber rolls quietly and grips, which is why it suits shops, hospitals and resin or tiled floors. It is the better choice where noise and floor marking matter.

Polyurethane takes a heavier point load without flat-spotting and resists oils and swarf, so it is the one for a workshop or a yard. The 8 in castors roll over a lip or a drain cover far more easily than 6 in, which matters if the trolley goes in and out of a building.

Loading it safely

Put the heavy items low and over the castors rather than up against the fence, and keep the load inside the platform footprint. A fence stops things sliding; it is not a load-bearing structure and it will not hold a stack that leans on it.

Push rather than pull a loaded trolley, and take a corner at walking pace. Most trolley accidents are a load shifting on a turn rather than a wheel or a weld failing.

Keeping it serviceable

Clear string, tape and swarf off the castor axles and the swivel bearings, and check the castor bolts at each service. A loose castor plate cracks the bracket and then the deck.

Touch up any scratched paint on the deck and fence, and keep the trolley under cover where possible. A steel trolley stored outside will rust from the deck edge inwards, which is what eventually shortens its life.
