Plastering Scraper: Overview

The blade is stainless steel with a straight ground edge, mounted on a grip that runs the full width of the board. Widths run from 25 cm for corners, reveals and small repairs, up to 120 cm for pulling filler across a complete wall or ceiling panel in a single stroke.

The wide sizes are the reason these boards exist. At 60 cm and above a wall is skimmed in two or three passes rather than ten, and the finish is flatter because the blade spans the hollows instead of following them. The narrow boards are used where the wide ones cannot fit: a corner, a window return or a patched strip.

They are used with filler, skim coat, plaster and tile adhesive. Because the blade is stainless, water-based filler releases from it and the board can be washed out at the end of the day rather than being scraped clean.

Choosing a Plastering Scraper Width

1. Choose the width by the panel being finished: 25 cm and 40 cm boards for corners, returns and patching, 60 cm and 80 cm for a normal room wall, and 100 cm or 120 cm where whole ceilings and long runs are being skimmed.
2. A wide board is not a substitute for a wide reach: check that the surface can be worked in one stroke at the width chosen, since stopping halfway across a 120 cm pass leaves a join.
3. Where the filler is stiff, use a narrower board and more passes; a wide blade on thick material digs in at the edge and lifts the surface instead of spreading it.
4. Keep one narrow board for repairs and one wide board for skimming, and use them for nothing else – a wide blade used for scraping set material will never lie flat again.

Care and Maintenance

Clean filler and skim coat off the blade while it is still soft, and dry the board flat rather than standing it on edge, which is what bows a long blade.

Do not lever or scrape hardened material with the board: it is a spreading tool, and a rolled edge will leave a line on every wall it touches.
