A plastering job is judged on the trowel, and a trowel is judged on its blade: it has to stay flat, take an edge and not rust between jobs. These are flat trowels in blue steel, carbon steel and stainless steel, from 24 cm up to 60 cm.
Plastering Trowel: Overview
Blades are offered in three materials. Blue steel is the traditional plastering blade: it takes a fine edge, holds it through a set, and is the choice for finish coats. Carbon steel is the lower-cost general blade for rendering, patching and adhesive. Stainless steel does not rust in wet or cement-rich mixes, which is what suits a blade that is used with adhesive or left wet between jobs.
Widths run from 24 cm for patching, narrow reveals and detail work up to 60 cm for pulling a whole wall flat. The small blades are also supplied in a notched nine-point pattern, which is used to scratch a key into a base coat so the next coat grips it.
Every blade is set on a wooden handle with the blade in line with the grip. That in-line layout is what allows the blade to be held flat against the wall and rotated through the normal trowel stroke instead of being held at an angle.

Choosing a Plastering Trowel
- Choose blue steel for finish coats: it takes a fine edge and leaves the flattest surface, but it must be dried after use or it will mark.
- Choose stainless steel where the trowel is used with tile adhesive, cement-rich render or wet mixes, and where it may be left damp between jobs.
- Choose carbon steel for general patching and rendering where cost matters more than the finish, and expect to dress the edge more often.

Care and Maintenance
Dry the blade after every wash and give steel blades a wipe of oil before storing them; the edge that rusts first is the one that then leaves a line on the wall.
Do not use a plastering trowel to open tins, lever boards or scrape set material: any bend in the blade shows in the finish, and a bowed blade cannot be dressed flat again by hand.
