A left-hand thread is used wherever rotation would otherwise unscrew a part: on a reversing shaft, a wheel spindle on one side of a vehicle, and on adjustment threads that must not run back under load. Taps and dies for left-hand threads are not interchangeable with the ordinary right-hand ones. This set covers M3 to M30 in coarse and fine pitches, supplied as tap and die pairs by size. Made by the supplier.

Left-Hand Tap and Die: Overview
Each size is supplied as a matched tap and die pair, so the internal and external threads cut to the same pitch and a stud made with the die will enter a hole cut with the tap.
The taps and dies are HSS, which holds its edge in steel and stainless, and the die is split and adjustable within its holder so the fit on the thread can be set slightly tight or slightly free.
Left-hand tooling cuts in the opposite direction to normal. Ordering the correct hand is the whole point: a right-hand tap in a left-hand hole strips the thread on the first pass.
Key Features at a Glance
- M3 to M30 – coarse and fine pitches in one range.
- Left-hand thread – for reverse-thread studs and holes.
- HSS – holds an edge in steel and stainless steel.
- Tap and die pairs – matched internal and external threads.
- Adjustable split die – fit can be set to the work.
- Bulk sizes – from M3 up to M46 on request.
Cutting a Left-Hand Thread
Tapping a hole
Drill the tapping size for the pitch being cut, chamfer the hole, and start the tap square to the face. Left-hand taps are turned anticlockwise to cut, and they are backed off clockwise a part turn every half turn forward to break the chip.
Use cutting oil and do not force the tap. A tap that is being turned with two hands and a lot of effort is a tap about to snap, and a broken tap in a hole is a difficult and expensive problem.
Threading a stud
Chamfer the end of the stud, mount the die in its holder the right way round, and start it square. Keep the die flooded with cutting oil and reverse it a part turn regularly to clear the swarf.
Set the split die adjustment for the fit required: closed for a tight thread, opened a little for a free one. Check with the matching nut or the tap before running it the full length.
Care and Safety
Tool care
Clean swarf out of the flutes with a brush, never with a finger or compressed air against the hand. Swarf left in the flutes is what makes the next thread rough and the tap tight.
Oil the tools before putting them away, and keep them in a box so the cutting edges are not knocked against each other.
Identification
Keep left-hand tooling physically separate from right-hand tooling and label it. The two look identical and the mistake is only discovered when a thread has already been ruined.
Store by size so the pitch can be checked against a thread gauge before the tool is put to the work.

Where It Is Used
Restoring and cutting reverse threads on vehicle wheel spindles and reversing shafts, making left-hand studs and adjusters for machinery, maintenance work on industrial equipment that uses left-hand fasteners, and toolroom jobbing work.
Choosing Taps and Dies
- Confirm the hand of the thread before ordering: left-hand tooling cuts anticlockwise.
- Check the pitch against a thread gauge; coarse and fine pitch of the same diameter are different tools.
- HSS tooling is worth it for steel and stainless; carbon steel suits softer materials.
- Buy the tap and the die as a pair so the internal and external threads match.
- For production work, buy two taps: one to start and one to finish, so the finishing tap keeps its size.
Care and Maintenance
Brush swarf out of the flutes after use.
Keep left-hand tooling separate and labelled.
Oil tools before storage.
Use cutting oil when threading.
Never force a tight tap; back it out and clear the chip.
OEM and Bulk Supply
Own-brand printing, custom case layouts and retail packaging are available on request, with OEM and ODM support.
