Using a Foot Pump

Pressure and valves

Check the recommended pressure for the vehicle rather than the number on the tyre wall; the wall figure is a maximum, not a target.

Screw the connector fully onto the valve and check the gauge settles. A connector that is not fully on reads low and lets the tyre down while it is being inflated.

Technique

Stand on the pedal and use body weight rather than the ankle, and keep a steady rhythm. The pump works on displacement, so a smooth stroke moves more air than a fast, short one.

Inflate in stages and recheck. Tyres warm as they are filled and the pressure rises with them, so set the final figure last.

Care

Storage and seals

Store it dry. The cylinder and the piston seal are the parts that fail, and water in the barrel is what starts that.

Check the hose for cracks where it enters the pump body; that is where flexible hose splits first.

Gauge and connector

Protect the gauge from knocks, and do not overtighten the valve connector. The seal inside the connector is a small replaceable part and it is the usual reason a pump will not hold pressure.
