Detail polishing is done with a small mounted point on a rotary tool: the shape reaches into a carved groove or a carved eye, and the grit takes out the tool marks without rounding the detail. These points run 80 to 2000 grit on a 2.35 mm and 3 mm shanks. Made by Dongwu Mojian.
Diamond Mounted Polishing Point: Overview
The point is a shaped abrasive head on a steel shank. Shape matters as much as grit: a pointed head reaches into a groove, a cylindrical one keeps a flat, a wheel blends a curve.
Diamond grit cuts fast on hard, brittle materials such as stone, glass, ceramic and hardened metal, and it holds its shape far longer than a soft abrasive.
The 2.35 mm and 3 mm shanks fits the collet of a mini rotary tool, which is the machine these points are designed for.

Working with Mounted Points
Grit sequence
Work through the grits in order: 80 to 2000. Skipping a step leaves scratches that the finer grit has to remove, which uses the point up twice as fast.
Keep the point moving. Holding it in one place cuts a hollow and burns the surface, and on close detail work that hollow is impossible to remove.
Material and shape
Use the pointed shapes for grooves, eyes and letter edges, and the cylindrical or wheel shapes for flats and blending. Matching the head to the profile is what keeps the detail crisp.
Run at high speed with light pressure. Pressure only loads the point and heats the work, which on resinous wood and amber may mark the surface.
Care
Cleaning
Brush swarf out of the point between grits, and keep the points separate. A coarse point rubbing against a fine one in a box will ruin the fine one.
Store points in the case they came in, with the caps left on the shanks.
When to replace
A point that stops cutting and starts polishing has lost its bite; clean it once, and if it still will not cut, replace it. Forcing a worn point burns the work instead of cutting it.
Check the shank for straightness before use. A bent shank runs out in the collet and the point will not cut a clean surface.
