Galvanised D Shackle: Overview

Shackles are sized by the pin thread, not by the load. A small shackle next to a lifting sling looks undersized, but it is the pin that decides the rated capacity, so the size has to be matched to the sling and to the load rather than chosen by eye.

The D form is the shape for a straight pull. A bow shackle is used where the load comes in from several directions; a D shackle keeps the pin aligned with a single pull and takes less space in a tight eye.

Selecting and Using a Shackle

Sizing

Match the pin diameter to the sling or eye it has to pass through, then check the rated load against the lift. An undersized pin wears and opens under load; an oversized shackle will not sit in the eye it is meant to hold.

Mark the size on the shackle when it goes into service. Once a mixed box of shackles is loose in a van, the marking on the body is the only reliable identifier.

D or bow

Use a D shackle for a single, straight pull and a bow shackle where the load comes from several directions. Fitting a D shackle to a multi-leg sling loads the pin off-centre, which is how shackles bend open.

Check the pin is fully home and tight before the lift. A screw pin that is only hand-started will work loose under vibration and cycle.

Inspection and Care

Before every use

Look for cracks at the crown, wear in the bow, a bent pin and damaged threads. Distortion and thread damage retire a shackle; they are not repairable.

Never weld, heat or re-bend a shackle. Heat changes the properties of the steel and the rated load no longer applies.

Storage

Store by size in a dry place. Galvanising resists weather, not a permanently wet toolbox.

Keep shackles out of the general hardware bin so a lifting item is not lost among unrated fittings.
