Scoring and snapping

Lay the sheet face up on a flat surface, hook the tool over the edge and pull it the length of the cut in one steady pass. Stop and start and the score will have a step in it at the point where you paused.

Snap the board back away from the score, then run a knife along the back paper and fold the board open. The paper is what holds the two halves together, so cut it rather than tearing it, or the board will crumble along the break.

When a manual cutter is the right tool

For a few sheets on a refurbishment the manual cutter is faster than setting up a power tool and it produces no dust. It is also the only practical option where there is no power on site.

For production runs of whole rooms a rotary or a track saw is quicker, and the manual tool is then kept for the odd cut, for awkward shapes and for the last sheet of the day.

Blade and depth

Keep the scoring blade clean of plaster dust and check it for a nick. A nicked blade leaves a ragged score, and the sheet then breaks off the line instead of along it.

Replace the blade rather than trying to sharpen it; the cut depends on the blade being harder than the paper and the plaster, and a re-ground edge loses that.

Storage and handling

Wipe the tool down and store it dry. Plaster dust holds moisture against the casting, and a stainless body that is left dirty in a van will pit at the guide faces.

Carry it by the body, not by the guide, and protect the blade in transit. A tool whose guide face has been dropped on a kerb will never run a straight line again.
