Quick Water Valve and Hose Fittings: Overview

The system is two parts: a valve body set into the ground or into a riser, and a key that opens it. Water is taken where it is needed instead of being dragged across a lawn in a hose.

Bodies are supplied in the common 3/4 in, 1 in, 1/2 in sizes, with risers where the outlet has to sit above ground level and valve boxes where the body needs protection and a flush finish.

The fittings are also sold on their own, because the couplers, elbows and repair connectors wear out long before the valve body does.

Installing the Valve

Setting the body

Set the body so the top is level with the finished ground, and bed it on gravel so it does not sink when the ground softens. A body set proud of the lawn will be hit by the mower, and one set too deep cannot be opened with the key.

Flush the line before the body is finally tightened. Grit and swarf from new pipework are what jam a valve open, and the valve is usually the last item fitted.

Valve boxes

A box keeps soil and grass out of the body and gives a flush finish in a lawn or a border. Choose the size from the pipework that has to pass through it, not only from the valve.

Leave the box slightly below the surrounding surface so the lid does not stand proud and catch a mower blade.

Care and Winterising

Before frost

Drain the line and open each valve so water does not sit in the body. Ice is what splits these fittings, not use.

Remove the key and store it indoors; a key left in the ground is the part that goes missing over winter.

Repairing leaks

A leaking valve is usually a worn O-ring rather than a failed body. Clean the seat and fit a new ring before replacing the whole unit.

Couplings and repair connectors are consumables. Keep spares on the van rather than ordering one at a time.
