Tyre Pressure Pen Gauge: Overview

This is the mechanical pen gauge: press it onto the valve and a graduated rod extends to show the pressure, then release and it returns. Nothing to charge and nothing to calibrate, so it stays working in a glovebox for years.

Two ranges are supplied. The 0-9 kg/cm2 version covers car and motorcycle tyres, where most readings sit between 2 and 3 bar. The 0-15 kg/cm2 version covers light commercial vehicles and higher-pressure tyres.

The body is steel rather than plastic, which is what survives being stood on in a toolbox. Accuracy is quoted at 0.02 kg/cm2 graduation by the supplier, and pressure reads in kg/cm2.

Checking Pressure

How to read it

Remove the valve cap, press the gauge squarely onto the valve and read the rod where it stops. Press again to confirm: a leaking valve or a gauge held at an angle gives a low reading.

Check tyres cold. A tyre that has run for a few miles reads higher, and setting pressure on a hot tyre leaves it low once it cools.

How often

Once a month and before a long journey is enough for most vehicles. Pressure loss of about 0.07 bar a month is normal, and a slow puncture hides inside that figure.

Check the spare at the same time, and check the valve caps are fitted: they are the first seal against dirt in the valve.

Choosing the Range

0-9 kg/cm2

The lower range spreads the scale over the pressures a car or motorcycle actually uses, so it is easier to read to a tenth. Use it where the vehicle runs at 2 to 3 bar.

It will not read a heavily loaded van tyre, which is where the second version is used.

0-15 kg/cm2

The wider range covers light commercial and higher-pressure tyres, trading a little readability at car pressures for coverage at the top of the scale.

For a mixed fleet, the 0-15 version is the safer single gauge to keep in the vehicle.

Choosing the Right Item

Care and Maintenance

Check the thread, pin or gate before each use: the moving part is what fails first on a fitting.

Do not mix stainless and galvanised parts where the assembly stays wet; the two metals corrode each other.

Store fittings dry and off the floor, and keep damaged items out of stock rather than returning them to the box.
