Folding Storage Cage: Overview
The cage is a welded wire mesh body on a steel base with a hinged gate. Wire sides let stock be seen and counted without opening anything, and let air through where a solid bin would hold damp.
The important feature is that it folds. Empty cages take a fraction of the floor space, which is what makes them usable in a workshop that cannot dedicate a permanent block of the floor to storage.
Sizes run from 800 x 600 x 640 mm, 1000 x 800 x 840 mm with castors on the larger models, so a loaded cage can be pushed rather than lifted.

Choosing and Using a Cage
Size and load
Choose the size from what has to be stored rather than from the floor space available alone: a cage loaded with dense metal parts quickly reaches a weight the castors and the folded base will not carry.
Check the load rating on the castors where the cage will be moved loaded. Rolling a heavy cage over a threshold is where castors fail, and a loaded cage is not something that can be caught.
Folding and stacking
Fold the cage with the gate open and the base clean. Grit on the hinges is what makes folding stiff, and a cage that will not fold is stored on the floor where it wastes the space it was bought to save.
Stack loaded cages only on firm, level ground and only up to the height the base is designed for. Mesh cages stack well but they concentrate the load on four small feet.
Care
Routine checks
Check the welds at the base corners and the hinge points. The base carries the whole load, and a cracked weld there is the failure that matters.
Keep the castors clean and free of wire and strapping. A castor jammed by a wrap of tape will drag and flat-spot.
Storage
Dry storage suits the galvanised finish; a wet floor will still shorten its life at the base where water collects.
Fold cages that are not in use rather than leaving them in the aisle.
