Choosing Capacity and Lift

Capacity

Choose the capacity from the heaviest load plus a margin, not from the average. Lifting a bag of cement and lifting a bag of cement that has taken on water are different jobs.

Where a load is lifted regularly, a hoist working near its limit will run hot and wear the brake; a size up is usually the cheaper choice over a season.

Lift height

Measure from the mounting point to the lowest point the load has to reach, then add the height of the load and a little slack. Rope that is too short leaves the load short of the floor.

The 12 m version covers most first-floor work; 20 m and 30 m are for taller buildings and deep drops.

Installation and Safety

Mounting

The mounting has to carry the load plus the hoist and the dynamic force of starting and stopping, which is greater than the static weight. Fix to a structural member, not to a bracket chosen for its convenience.

Keep the rope vertical and clear of edges: a rope running over a sharp edge will fail at that point, not at the hook.

Using it safely

Keep people clear of the load and never stand under it. Check the rope for kinks and broken strands before each use and check the limit stop works.

Hoists of this type are for material, not for lifting people, and the installation should be checked by someone competent before it is put to work.

1. Size the unit to the floor and the doorway first: a platform that will not pass the door is no use however strong it is.
2. Match the wheels to the surface – smaller castors for smooth indoor floors, larger ones for yards, kerbs and paving.
3. For a trolley that is parked on a slope or loaded into a vehicle, order the braked castor option.
4. Check the capacity against the heaviest realistic load plus a margin, not against the average load.

Care and Maintenance

Check castors, pins and rope before each use, and keep swivel castors clear of tape, string and swarf.

Load the heaviest items low and over the axle, and never exceed the stated capacity.

Keep hinge and pivot points lightly oiled, and replace a flat-spotted castor rather than continuing to run it.
