Rated pull runs from 2,000 lb, which handles a light trailer or a quad, up to 12,000 lb for a full-size 4×4 and 20,000 lb for truck and plant recovery. The rating is the first layer of rope on the drum; pull falls as the rope builds up, which is why most recovery guidance suggests a winch rated at around 1.5 times the vehicle weight.

Each capacity is offered with steel wire rope or Dyneema synthetic rope. Wire rope resists abrasion and heat and is the cheaper option; Dyneema is lighter, does not store energy the way a broken wire rope does, and is easier to handle with gloves, but it needs a protective sleeve where it runs over rock or a sharp edge.

Power is taken from the vehicle at 12 V or 24 V, so the winch runs from the battery and charging system rather than from a separate power pack. Battery condition and cable size matter more than the winch rating on a long pull.

Sizing the winch to the vehicle

Take the loaded weight of the vehicle, add the weight of anything it is dragging, and allow a margin. A 2,000 lb winch suits a light trailer or a quad; 3,500 lb to 4,500 lb covers a small 4×4; 9,500 lb to 12,000 lb is the usual fit for a full-size 4×4; 20,000 lb is truck and plant recovery.

The rated pull is measured on the first layer of rope on the drum. As the rope builds up, the effective pull drops, so a winch that is only just rated for the vehicle will be short of pull on the last layers.

Wire rope or Dyneema

Steel wire rope is abrasion resistant and tolerant of heat, and it is the lower-cost option. It stores energy when it breaks, so a damper or a heavy blanket over the line is standard practice on a hard pull.

Dyneema synthetic rope is lighter on the drum, does not whip dangerously when it parts, and is easier to handle. It cuts on sharp edges and degrades with heat, so it wants a sleeve or a fairlead and it should not be dragged over rock.

Wiring and battery load

Run cable sized for the full current of the winch, keep the run as short as practical, and land the earth on the chassis rather than on a body panel. A winch pulling hard draws a heavy current, and undersized cable turns into heat and lost pull.

Keep the engine running while winching so the alternator is contributing. On repeated pulls, let the motor and the solenoid cool between runs; the duty cycle, not the rating, is what limits how long a recovery winch can work.

Pulling safely

Lay the line out straight where possible, use a snatch block to double the pull or change direction, and keep everyone clear of the line and of the anchor. Never stand over a loaded rope.

Use a rated recovery point and a tree strap rather than a hook straight onto a chassis member. On a long pull, put a damper over the line and check the rope for kinks and flattened strands before the next use.
