Electric Chain Hoist: Overview
The hoist is a motor and gearbox unit that runs a chain over a load sprocket, controlled from a pendant. Load is lifted on the chain rather than on a rope, so the load stays where it is put.
Capacity and lift height are the two numbers that decide the unit: capacity from the heaviest load with a margin, and lift height from the distance between the hook in its highest position and the lowest point the load has to reach.
Voltage matters on site. 220 V units run from a domestic supply; 380 V units need a three-phase supply and lift faster for the same capacity.

Selecting a Hoist
Capacity and lift
Size the hoist above the heaviest load it will see, not at it. Shock loading from a load that is snatched or dropped adds far more than its static weight, and the rating applies to a steady lift.
Measure the lift height before ordering: hook to the highest point of the beam, minus the height of the hook block and the load, gives the chain length needed. A chain that is too short stops the job halfway.
Supply and mounting
Check the site supply before choosing: 380 V units need three-phase and lift faster, 220 V units run on a single-phase supply with a lower duty cycle.
The hoist is only as good as what it hangs from. A beam, bracket or gantry has to be rated for the load and the hoist together, and the mounting has to be checked by someone qualified.
Checks and Care
Before use
Check the chain for wear, twists and damaged links, and check the hook for opening, cracks and a working safety catch. A hook that has been opened out will let a sling come off under load.
Test the limit switches and the brake with a light load before a real lift, and keep the pendant cable clear of the load path.
Service
Lubricate the chain and check the brake and gearing on the supplier’s schedule. The brake is the safety-critical part and it is the part most often neglected.
Keep records of inspections and of any load testing where the hoist is used for lifting people or in a public workplace.
