Temperature control is the whole point of the tool. Heat-shrink tubing, PVC and paint each want a different temperature, and a gun without control turns a two-second job into a burnt one.

The nozzles direct the air: a wide spread for stripping paint and shrinking over a large area, and a concentrator for a small point of heat.

Using a Hot Air Gun

Temperature and distance

Start at the lowest temperature that does the job and increase only if it will not. Distance matters as much as the setting: the same temperature burns a surface from 20 mm and softens it from 100 mm.

Keep the gun moving. Holding it still is what scorches paint, melts conduit and sets fire to the material behind the one being worked on.

Common jobs

For heat shrink, use a concentrator nozzle and stop as soon as the tube has shrunk tight. For paint, a wide nozzle and a scraper work together, and the paint should soften rather than bubble.

For plastic welding and pipe bending, warm the material evenly on both sides. Heating one side only makes it distort instead of bending.

Care and Safety

Cooling down

Run the gun on the cold setting, or with the heating off, for a minute before putting it away. The element keeps its heat and the body stays hot long after the switch is off.

Clear dust out of the air intake. A restricted intake overheats the element, which is the usual way a hot air gun fails.

Safety

Keep the gun away from solvents, thinners and dust. A hot air gun near flammable vapour is the one risk that does not give a second chance.

Never point it at a gas cylinder, an aerosol or a sealed container, and keep a fire extinguisher or a bucket of water within reach in a workshop.
