Flutes, Shanks and Materials

Three flutes or six flutes

More flutes means more cutting edges in contact with the workpiece, so the tool cuts smoother and leaves a finer chamfer, but the narrower gullets clear chips less well. Six flutes is the general-purpose choice for steel where the chamfer will be seen or where a countersunk screw has to sit flush.
