A drill that starts off-centre drills a hole in the wrong place, and on a lathe it also whips. The centre drill is what stops that: a rigid stub with a small pilot point, spotted into the work so the following drill has a seat to start in, and the same tool chamfers the hole and deburrs it.
Centre Drill: Overview
These are HSS centre drills with a titanium nitride coating, ground with either a 90 degree or a 60 degree point. The 90 degree point is the general-purpose spotting and countersinking angle; the 60 degree point is used where a centre hole has to match a lathe centre or where a steeper chamfer is wanted on a screw head.
Sizes run from 3 mm to 20 mm. The smaller sizes, 3 to 8 mm, are the ones used with a hand drill or a pillar drill to spot a hole before drilling; 10 mm and above are used on larger work and in a lathe tailstock, and carry a bigger shank so the tool stays rigid under load.
A long series is also offered, with a 100 mm or 150 mm overall length, for spotting into a recess, past a boss or down between two upstands where a standard length tool will not reach.

Choosing an Abrasive
