A worn bar wears the chain and a worn chain wears the bar, so replacing both at once is what restores a saw’s cut. These are matched sets – chain and guide bar together – in 12, 16, 18 and 20 in, with a manganese steel bar.

Chainsaw Chain and Guide Bar Set, 12 to 20 in, Manganese Steel Bar

Chainsaw Chain And Bar Set: Overview

The set pairs a chain of the right pitch, gauge and link count with a guide bar of the same length, so the two are known to run together. Buying them separately is where most mistakes are made: a chain with the wrong drive link count will not go round a bar of that length, and the saw will not tension.

The bar is manganese steel, which is chosen for wear resistance at the nose and along the rails. The rail is the part that wears first on a bar, and once it opens the chain rocks and will not cut straight.

Four lengths are offered: 12 in with 45 links, 16 in with 59 links, 18 in with 72 links and 20 in with 76 links. These cover the small and mid-size saws used for tree work, logging, firewood and clearance.

The sets sell into garden and forestry retail, chainsaw dealers and repair shops, and tool ranges serving tree surgeons and firewood users.

Key Features at a Glance

  • Matched set – chain and bar known to fit together.
  • Four lengths – 12, 16, 18 and 20 in.
  • Correct link counts – 45, 59, 72 and 76 links.
  • Manganese steel bar – wears at the nose and rails.
  • Restores the cut – both parts replaced together.
  • Small and mid-size saws – tree work and firewood.

Where It Is Used

Tree surgery and arboriculture, firewood cutting, forestry and land clearance, garden and estate maintenance, and chainsaw dealers and repair shops stocking matched bar and chain sets.

Choosing a Chain and Bar Set

  1. Match the length to the saw’s engine and the work. A 12 or 16 in bar suits a small saw and limbing work; 18 and 20 in bars are for felling and larger timber and need the power to pull them.
  2. Take the set rather than the parts. The link count has to match the bar length, and a set removes the risk of buying a chain that will not run on the bar.
  3. Check the drive link count against the old chain before ordering. Link count, not bar length alone, is what decides whether a chain fits.
  4. Replace the bar and chain together where the bar rails are worn. A new chain on a worn bar will cut badly and wear out quickly.

Care and Maintenance

Check the chain tension before every use and re-tension after it has warmed up; a slack chain will jump the bar and a tight one will burn the bar nose.

Clean the bar groove and oil holes each time the chain is changed, and turn the bar over periodically so the rails wear evenly.
