A tape blade fails from the outside in. The painted print wears off first where it is dragged along masonry, then the steel underneath starts to rust. A nylon coating puts a tougher layer over both the print and the steel, which is why coated blades are the ones bought for site work rather than for a drawer.

The embossed finish adds a raised texture to that coating, so the blade does not slide away under a pencil line and the numbers stay readable when the tape is worn.

The case is moulded in ABS and then wrapped in a soft rubberised sleeve, so the part that hits the ground first is the part that can take it. Sizes run from 3 m with a 16 mm blade to 10 m with a 25 mm blade, all self-locking.

Nylon Coating and Blade Build

What the nylon coating does

The coating is a nylon layer bonded over the steel before the graduations are printed, so the print sits on the coating rather than on bare metal. Dragging a tape along a block wall wears the coating slowly; on an uncoated blade, the same movement takes the numbers off in weeks.

It also seals the blade against water and mortar dust, which is what turns a steel blade rusty at the edges after a season outdoors.

Eleven-wire stiffness

The blade is built from eleven steel wires in its cross-section rather than the seven or nine of a basic tape. More wires in the same width means a stiffer curve, so the blade can be pushed out across a gap without folding over.

That is the difference that matters once the tape is longer than 5 m: a 10 m blade on a 25 mm width can be handled by one person instead of two.

Case, Lock and Handling

Rubberised sleeve over ABS

The inner shell is moulded ABS, which is stiff and light. The outer sleeve is a softer rubberised layer that takes the impact when the tape is dropped, and gives the case enough grip to sit on a sloping roof without sliding off.

It also stops the case from scratching whatever it is set down on, which matters when the tape is used over finished work.

Self-locking blade

The lock engages as the blade is pulled out, so it stays where it is put without holding the button. Press the release to let it retract.

Retract the blade under control rather than letting it snap back: a blade that runs home at full speed is what wears the return spring and the hook rivets.
