Polishing Burrs for Carving and Finishing: Overview

A polishing burr is a small abrasive head on a steel shank. It spins in a rotary tool or pendant motor and works the surface where a file or a sheet of abrasive paper cannot reach: the inside of a relief, the gap between two carved petals, the underside of a rim. The shank only holds the head, so the profile of the head decides which jobs the burr can do.

This set is arranged as a grit sequence rather than a mixed box. 80 to 320 grit removes tool marks and levels the surface. 400 to 600 grit takes out the scratches the coarse grades leave behind. 1000 and 2000 grit bring the piece up to a polish, usually with a little compound. Working Through the Grit Sequence

Shaping and levelling, 80 to 320 grit

Use the coarse end for shaping only. 80 and 120 grit cut quickly and leave a scratch pattern that has to be removed later, so they belong on surfaces that still have material to come off: a flat face that needs levelling, an edge that needs a defined line, a carved area that is still too high.

220 and 320 grit are the transition grades. They take out the coarse scratches without removing much material, which is what makes them the right place to stop shaping and check the work under a light before moving on. If the piece still shows 120 grit marks at this stage, go back a grade rather than pressing harder on a fine burr.

Polishing, 400 to 2000 grit

400 and 600 grit are the working grades for most carvings. They remove the marks from the shaping stage and leave a surface that reads as smooth in the hand, which is where many utility pieces stop.

1000 and 2000 grit are for the mirror pass. Run them at lower speed than the coarse grades, keep the head moving, and add a little polishing compound once the surface is uniform. The result is a bright finish on horn, bone and dense wood, and a clean edge on the carved lines.

Between grades, brush the dust out of the carved lines and off the burr. Dust from a coarse grade left in a slot will keep cutting while a fine burr passes over it, and that is where stray scratches come from at the end of a job.

How to Choose

Care and Maintenance

Brush the burr clean between grades. Abrasive dust left on the head keeps cutting on the next pass.

Run fine grades at lower speed. Heat glazes the abrasive and the burr stops cutting evenly, which shows up as polish marks on the work.

Store the burrs so the heads do not touch each other. A chipped head will not run true and leaves a line the next grade cannot remove.

Replace a burr when it stops cutting and starts burnishing. Continued use at that point polishes the surface with the wear rather than removing material.
