Power tapping breaks taps for one reason: the spindle keeps turning when the tap cannot. A chuck with a torque clutch takes that decision away from the operator – the clutch releases at a set torque, the tap stops cutting, and the tap comes back out in one piece.

Tapping Chuck: Overview
The chuck holds the tap square on its shank and drives it through a clutch pack. Torque is set by the body size and the tap it carries: GT12 covers M3 to M16, GT24 covers M5 to M30, and TC820 covers the same M5 to M30 range in a heavier body. When a tap bottoms in a blind hole or jams on a chip, the clutch slips instead of shearing the tap.
Taps are changed by hand, without a key or a chuck key holder: the used tap is pulled out and the next size pushed in, which is what makes the chuck useful on a machine where several thread sizes are cut in one run. The body is machined from high-carbon steel and hardened to 45-48 HRC, with 0.05 mm runout so the thread starts straight.
Two thread standards are covered. The metric square and the JIS square used on Japanese taps differ in the shank square and the tap’s overall length, so the standard of the chuck has to be matched to the taps on the shelf before ordering.

Where It Is Used
Tapping chucks are used on electric tapping machines, radial and pillar drills where threads are cut under power, and on turret stations that carry a fixed tap. They suit production runs of the same thread, repair work where a thread has to be renewed in a blind hole, and any job where a broken tap would mean scrapping the part.
Choosing a Precision Screwdriver Set
- Match the set to the equipment being repaired: phone, watch and laptop work needs the smallest bits, appliance and general repair needs a wider spread of sizes.
- Check the bit material – S2 steel holds an edge far longer than plain carbon steel on the small sizes.
- Choose a metal or aluminium handle where the set is used daily, and a plastic handle where weight and cost matter more.
- Look at how the bits are held: a moulded tray keeps them in order, a loose pouch loses the small sizes first.
Care and Maintenance
Use the bit that fits the screw. A bit that is one size small will round both the screw head and the bit, which is the most common way these sets are ruined.
Wipe the bits dry after use and keep the case closed; the small sizes corrode quickly if they are left loose in a damp toolbox.
OEM and Bulk Supply
The supplier offers own-brand cases, pouches and printed packaging, and supports OEM and ODM work for private-label tool ranges.
