Tool Box: Overview
The tray is the part that makes a box usable day to day. Screws, bits and small spanners live in the tray; heavier tools go underneath, and the tray lifts out when the whole box is needed.
The body is moulded plastic that takes knocks without denting, which matters more than the finish on a box that is loaded in and out of a vehicle.
Cases are also used to store parts and consumables where a drawer is not available, and the sizes are picked to fit a shelf or a van rack.

Using a Tool Box
Loading
Keep the heavy tools in the bottom and the small parts in the tray. A box loaded the other way round puts the weight on the tray before the box, and the tray is the weakest part.
Leave the box closed when it is not being used. A box left open in a workshop collects swarf and dust that finds its way into every moving part.
Carrying and stacking
Check the latch before lifting by the handle. A box that opens in the hand is a full box of tools on the floor, and the habit is worth forming on a loaded box.
Stack boxes of similar size and keep the heaviest at the bottom. Stacking on a shelf is fine; stacking in a van needs a strap.
Care
Cleaning
Empty and wipe the box out periodically. Grit in the bottom wears through the plastic where the heavy tools sit, and it rusts the tools.
Wipe the hinge and latch and leave them dry; a plastic box keeps water in as well as it keeps it out.
Storage
Store out of direct sun where the box will be kept for years; ultraviolet light makes moulded plastic brittle.
Do not stand on a box, and do not use one as a step: the lid is not a load-bearing surface.
