This one is electroplated on a steel plate and bonded to a moulded base, and it is offered in sixteen grits so a workshop can keep a coarse stone for reshaping and a fine one for finishing.
Diamond Whetstone: Overview
The abrasive is a single layer of diamond grain electroplated onto a flat steel blank. Diamond removes hardened steel, carbide and ceramic far quicker than aluminium oxide, and because the plate behind it is steel it keeps its flatness. That matters most on chisels, plane irons and wide blades, where a hollow in the middle of the stone rounds the edge over time.
The base is a moulded plastic or resin block that raises the working face clear of the bench and gives the stone something to be held by. The 150 x 63 mm face is large enough for a plane iron or a chef’s knife to be drawn across it in full, and small enough to be stored in a drawer or a toolbox.
Grit selection follows the usual progression: 80 to 320 for repairing a damaged edge or changing a bevel angle, 400 to 800 for the working edge, and 1000 to 3000 for polishing and for carving tools that need to cut cleanly. Because diamond does not need to be soaked, the stone can be used dry or with a little water as a lubricant.
The stones are bought by sharpening services and knife shops, by kitchens that keep their own knives, and by workshops that sharpen tooling in house rather than sending it out.

Choosing a Diamond Whetstone
- Buy the grit you actually work at. A single 400 grit stone will maintain a kitchen knife, but a workshop that re-grinds bevels needs an 80 or 120 grit stone as well, and one fine stone at 1000 grit or above for finishing.
- Choose by the widest blade you sharpen. A 150 x 63 mm face takes a plane iron and a long chef’s knife in one stroke; narrower stones force the blade to be worked in sections and wear unevenly.
- Keep diamond away from very light pressure on fine grits: the layer is a single plating, and leaning on a 1200 grit stone wears the grain out before the steel is polished.
- If the stone is going to see daily use, buy two – a coarse one that takes the abuse and a fine one that stays flat and clean.
Care and Maintenance
Rinse the stone after use and dry it: swarf left on a diamond plate glazes over and the next blade will skate instead of cutting.
Store it flat and out of the sun. Do not use oil on a diamond plate, which holds the swarf in the grain, and do not drop it, since a bent steel blank cannot be flattened again.
