The valve is fitted to the end of a supply pipe, usually through a tee, so a hose point can be dropped wherever watering is needed. The stake version is used where the pipe comes up out of the ground in a lawn or a bed and there is nothing to fix a bracket to.

Fitting the stake

Drive the stake so the coupling sits level with or just above the surface, then flush the line before connecting the valve so grit does not lodge in the seal.

In heavy clay, check the stake still stands upright after the first watering; a staked valve that leans will not seal against a hose pushed in at an angle.

Through the season

Rinse soil off the coupling before the hose is connected, and leave the hose out of the valve over winter so the seal is not compressed for months at a time.

If the valve is left in ground that freezes, lift the stake and store it dry.
