A tape measure on a site is dropped more often than it is set down, and the case is what gives out first. This one carries a moulded rubber sleeve over a thickened ABS shell, so the outer layer takes the scuffing and the impact and the shell underneath stays square.

The blade is the eleven-wire type: eleven steel strands across the section rather than seven or nine, which makes a blade stand out further before it folds and return straight after it is bent.

It is offered in two blade finishes. Matte is a low-reflectivity treatment for working under floodlights or in bright sun where a polished blade glares. Electroplated is a plated finish for damp sites, cold stores and vans where a bare steel blade would rust at the hook.

What the sleeve adds

The sleeve is a rubberised layer moulded over the ABS shell. When the tape is dropped, that layer deforms and spreads the impact instead of passing it straight into the shell, which is what cracks a case and jams the lock.

It also gives the case enough friction to stay where it is put, which matters on a pitched roof or a sloping bench where a hard plastic case will slide.

Thickened shell

Under the sleeve the shell wall is thicker than a standard case. A thicker wall keeps the blade mouth and the lock aligned, so the mechanism still runs true after the tape has been dropped a few times.

The trade-off is a little extra weight, which is why the range starts at 3 m with a 16 mm blade and stops at 7.5 m rather than going to 10 m.

Matte and Electroplated Blades

Matte blade

A matte or satin finish scatters light instead of reflecting it. Under floodlights, in a warehouse or in low winter sun, that is the difference between reading a graduation at an angle and losing it in the glare off a polished blade.

The same surface holds print well, which is why matte blades are the usual choice where the tape is printed with a private label.

Electroplated blade

Electroplating puts a plated layer over the steel so water and mortar dust sit on top of the plating rather than attacking the blade. On a damp site, or for a tape that lives in an unheated van over winter, that is the finish that lasts.

The plated surface is harder than bare steel, so it also resists the scratching that starts along blade edges when grit gets inside the case.
