Impact Sprinkler Head: Overview

The head works on a swinging arm that interrupts the jet and indexes the body round on each pass. That is why an impact sprinkler throws further than a fixed sprayer on the same pressure.

The arc is set with the trip collars, so the same head will water a full circle, a half circle or a strip along a fence line.

The body is alloy rather than plastic, which keeps the bearing and the arm accurate over seasons of outdoor use.

Setting the arc

Set one trip collar for the start of the arc and the other for the end, then run the head through a full cycle to check the water is falling where it is wanted and not on a path or a wall.

Adjust the deflector to change the throw rather than the pressure. Turning the pressure down shortens the throw but also spoils the break-up of the jet.

Pressure and spacing

These heads need a reasonable working pressure to index properly. On a long run of small hose the arm will stall; a bigger bore hose or a shorter run usually fixes it.

Space heads so each covers the next, rather than leaving strips. On a full circle a 180 degree and 360 degree head covers a circle with a radius set by pressure, and overlapping the edges is what gives even coverage.

Care

Keeping it turning

Clean the nozzle and the arm pivot. Grit and lime in the pivot are the usual reasons a head stops indexing, and both are removable with a brush and clean water.

Fit a filter on the supply where the water carries sand; the nozzle is small and the smallest grit will block it.

Winter

Take the head off the riser and drain it before frost. Water left inside splits the body, not the nozzle.

Store heads dry and indoors so the alloy does not corrode in a damp shed.
