Steel Rule: Overview

The rule is stainless steel, rolled and hardened, with the graduations etched and filled so they stay legible after the surface has been handled. One face is graduated in millimetres and one in inches and fractions, which is what makes the rule useful on imported equipment and on drawings that mix the two systems.

Thickness and width increase with length: the 150 mm rule is 0.5 or 0.7 mm thick and 19 mm wide, while the 1 m rule is 1.0 mm thick and 28 mm wide. That keeps a long rule from bending when it is used to strike a line, and it keeps the short rule light enough to sit in a pocket or a top pocket.

Several of the sizes are also offered with a conversion table on the reverse instead of the imperial scale, which suits bench work where metric dimensions are being read off an imperial drawing, or the other way round.

Choosing a Steel Rule

1. Choose the length by the widest thing being measured: 150 or 300 mm for bench and machine work, 600 mm and 1 m for sheet, panel and setting-out work where a tape measure would sag.
2. Choose the metric-and-imperial version where the work mixes the two systems, or the conversion table version where dimensions are being converted back and forth all day.
3. Take the thicker rule for a rule that will be used as a straight edge as well as a scale. The 1.0 mm rules will not bend under a pencil line; the 0.5 mm rule is for measuring only.
4. Keep a short rule on the person and a long one at the bench rather than trying to work with a single size.

Care and Maintenance

Wipe the rule dry after use, especially after working on site: a steel rule that is put away damp will pit and the graduations will fill with rust.

Do not use a steel rule as a screwdriver or a scraper. The ends are square and true for measuring from, and a burred end will not sit flat on the work.
