Rotary Hammer: Overview
The hammer mechanism drives a piston against the bit, so the drilling energy comes from the tool rather than from pressure applied by the operator. The result is faster drilling in hard material and far less effort.
SDS Plus tooling is held in a slotted shank that allows the bit to move axially as it hammers, which is why these drills use SDS bits rather than round shanks.
Three functions cover the jobs the tool is bought for: hammer drilling for fixings, drilling only for light work and chiselling for taking out tiles and chasing.

Using a Rotary Hammer
Choosing the mode
Use hammer drilling for concrete and masonry, drill only for timber, steel and tiles, and the chisel function for tiles, render and chasing. Running the chisel mode against a wall that has to stay intact is how edges get broken out.
Let the bit cool between holes on long runs. The bit tip is the part that wears, and a hot tip loses its edge and stops cutting at the rate the tool is capable of.
Bits and dust
Match the bit to the fixing: the plug or anchor decides the hole size, and a hole drilled one size large holds nothing.
Clear the hole before the fixing goes in. Dust left in the hole is the usual reason a wall plug pulls out, and a blow-out pump or a blow and brush takes seconds.
Care
Grease and brushes
Check the grease in the SDS chuck and top it up on the supplier’s schedule. A dry chuck wears its slots and the bit starts to wobble, which is the beginning of the end for the tool.
Blow dust out of the vents and check the cord before use. Hammers work in dust, and dust is what kills the motor.
Storage
Store in the case with the bits in the holder, and keep it dry. Chisels and bits are stored with the cutting edge protected so they do not chip against each other.
