Why the case is rubber-coated

A tape measure lives in a tool belt, a bucket or a van floor, and the first thing to fail on a cheap tape is the case cracking at the corner where it lands. The overmoulded shell spreads that impact and keeps the case closed.

The coating also gives a grip that does not slip when the case is wet, which is the practical difference when measuring on a roof, a scaffold or a wet floor.

Frosted, yellow or clear coated blade

A frosted or white-ground blade reads black graduations against a light background, the easiest combination in flat or dim light. Yellow is chosen where the tape has to be found in a pile of tools and where contrast matters most.

The clear finish is a coated steel blade. The coating protects the graduations from the abrasion of being dragged across brick, block and concrete, which is what erases the numbers on a bare blade.

Choosing a Tape Measure

1. Match length to the work: 3 m for a pocket tape, 5 m for general trade use, and 7.5 m or 10 m where a longer reach is needed.
